A Drop in the Ocean need volunteers who can travel to Greece in April. We need volunteers from 8th of May in Athens and we need volunteers in Nea Kavala in Northern Greece from 16th of April.
As a volunteer in A Drop in the Ocean you will work directly with residents in the refugee camps we are present. The work consists largely of distribution of food, clothing and other necessary items. Volunteers must be able to work in Greece for at least ten days.
Northern Greece
The market where we distribute clothes in Nea Kavala
We are working in the official refugee camp Nea Kavala in Northern Greece. A camp that has just over 500 residents and is located about an hour’s drive from the city of Thessaloniki.
A Drop in the Ocean is responsible for the distribution of food and clothing in the camp, and this will be important daily tasks for volunteers in Nea Kavala. In addition, volunteers work in our warehouse where we receive and store donations. Two days a week volunteers will travel to Thessaloniki and pick up vegetables that they will distribute to the residents of the camp.

ATHENS
Sorting out socks in the mother and baby space
In Athens, we are working in the official refugee camp Skaramangás, which is about 40 minutes by car away from the centre of Athens. Approximately 2,500 people are living in the camp.
Volunteers work with different tasks and activities that A Drop in the Ocean organise in the camp. We have created a space for mothers and children and have a community centre where we organise English classes for adults, dance lessons for girls, game evenings and lend out sewing machines. In addition, we distribute clothes and food to camp residents and have a warehouse where we sort and store donations we receive. As a volunteer you are expected to contribute both in the warehouse and in the camp.

It is hard to pinpoint period we need volunteers the most since it is constantly changing, but right now we need someone from 24th of april in Athens. In general though we appreciate volunteers who plan months ahead so if you register dates in July/August now, that allows us and you to plan ahead for your stay and make it as effective as possible.

we can’t really give you a ballpark figure on the costs. Tickets varies a lot from country to country, accommodations depends on how long you stay (airbnb is cheaper than hotels), and food depends on you and if you make your own meals or eat in restaurants. If you join one of our Facebook-groups you can get in touch with volunteers in your area and hear what they spent, that might be the most accurate numbers.
